Description:
Kota Kinabalu: Opus Publications, 2012. Illustrated with black and white photographs, pp xx, 152; xx, 122, a very good copy in dustwrapper. The book also includes the original Japanese text. [A beautifully written Japanese soldiers memoir of the North Borneo tragedy of 1945, An End to a War tells the story of Ueno Itsuyoshi, a late draftee into the Japanese Army in World War II. Ueno and his fellow soldiers came to Borneo expecting to fight and die for the Emperor, but instead most died of exhaustion, starvation and disease. This is undoubtedly the best eye-witness description we have of the horror of the death marches that took the lives of many thousands of Japanese, Australian, British and, indirectly, local people. Few of those who were ordered to march from the east coast ever arrived at their destinations on the west coast. Uenos story provides a broader context to the infamous Sandakan-Ranau death marches of Allied POWs, a few of whom he met briefly on his trek. In this book…

Description:
Kota Kinabalu: Opus Publications, 2012. Hardcover. New/new. Whereas the infamous Sandakan-Ranau death marches at the end of World War II have been fairly well documented by Allied POW survivors and others, English accounts of Japanese soldiers' experiences are not so common. In an effort to redress this, the editor, RW Braithwaite, whose father was an Australian POW survivor of the marches, presents this translated account of a Japanese conscript. Although Ueno expected to fight for his emperor, instead he had to cope with exhaustion, starvation and disease which wiped out most of his comrades on the march. The book is bilingual in English and Japanese. 280 pages with some black and white photos and indexes. Weight: 1.1 kg. Post free within Malaysia, but, due to its weight, this book is likely to incur additional postal charges when posted outside Malaysia
