About This Item
Nashville, [Tennessee]: Republican Banner Print., 1865. Broadside, 9 x 12 inches. Very good.
Auctioneer's announcement, a rare American broadside for an auction from 1865, the last year of the American Civil War, approximately six months post-war, for over sixty-six acres in Robertson County offering a dwelling house, kitchen, a smoke house, stables and a never-failing water supply near Red River.
The land had been contested in Chancery Court by J.A.W. Jackson and Mary A. Jackson vs. Benjamin E. Jackson. Robertson County, Tennessee flourished in the nineteenth century with its tobacco and whiskey industries. During the Civil, Confederate cavalryman John Hunt Morgan and his "Morgan's Raiders" were active in the county keeping Federal forces from rail and supply sources.
The name of the auctioneer, Miles S. Draughon, appears in government documents when in 1878 Draughon sought relief for payments due when the Eighth Wisconsin Battery was quartered in Nashville during the American Civil War, between late December, 1864 and May, 1865. A rare southern American broadside.
Allen 6119. Not in OCLC or Hummel. IB100
