About This Item

(a) The Role of the Communist Party. Communist Party Syllabus. The Communist Party, London, 1961. 8vo. (215 x 140 mm), 23 pages. Paper wraps age-toned and slightly wrinkled. Light water stain to the lower fore-edge corner of all pages not affecting text. Text clean. Fair to good condition.

A snapshot of the party leadership's views of the historical position of and continuing necessity for the CPGB. With other sections concerning the party's role and relationship to the Labour Party, democratic centralism, and structure of the party. Despite the denunciations of Stalin in 1956, works by Stalin are still listed as background reading.

(b) Report of the Committee on Party Organisation. The Communist Party, London, 1965. 8vo. (215 x 140 mm), 24 pages. Paper wraps age-toned. Light creases to corners of wraps. Text clean. Good condition.

Established by the CPGB Executive Committee in late 1964, the Committee was established to make proposals regarding the size, structure and organisation of Party branches and the organisation of the Party at District and Area levels. Additionally, the Committee was asked to make proposals to strengthen the financial bases of the Party and consider the method and level of payment of wages to Party full-time workers. This was an initiative to address the issue of membership growth within the context of member recruitment being off-set by recurrent membership losses. As such it reviewed how to encourage membership growth, how branches should work politically, and the Party's overall structure and (self-generated) finance.

(c) The Role of Communist Party Branches in the Mass Struggle for Socialism. The Communist Party, London, 1974. 12mo. (172 x 112 mm), 49 pages. Stiff card cover. Cover and text clean. Very good condition.

Written in the style of a manual for party members, sections cover types of party branches, the public fight for the policy of the party, and branch life, with a number of shorter sections on practical questions such as public meetings and contesting elections. Displaying a somewhat more open attitude to working within the labour [i.e. workplace and industrial] movement to promote unity and provide leadership.
