Erskine Beveridge (1851-1920) published several books on Scottish history and culture in addition to his work as an antiquarian and textile manufacturer. According to the Forward, written by his widow, Margaret S. Beveridge, this book was a manuscript that he had spent many months working on. The book consists of a collection and tabulation of the place-names of Scotland in alphabetical order that include "aber" or "inver" as either a prefix or suffix. The proofs were revised by Walter M. Campbell and the book printed by T. and A. Constable at the University Press, Edinburgh.
