Jonathan Cape, 1926. Hardcover. Acceptable. 1926. First Edition. 480 pages. No dust jacket. Green cloth with gilt lettering. Black and white photographic plates. Light foxing and moderate tanning to pages and plates. More prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers. Light cracking and creasing to gutters; subtle looseness to binding but pages remain attached. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild staining, tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has heavier tanning with soft splitting and crushing to ends. Lettering remains bright and clear. Book has a slight forward lean.
Synopsis
Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years (Harcourt, Brace & Co., 1926) by Carl Sandburg is a two-volume biography covered Lincoln’s life up to his move from Springfield to Washington to become the President of the United States. Sandburg had planned to stop writing about Lincoln after the publication of The Prairie Years, but he became engaged in Lincoln’s life and for the next thirteen years he researched and wrote about the President’s last four years. In 1939, Sandburg published the second part of the biography, the four-volume Pulitzer-Prize winning Abraham Lincoln: The War Years.
