[Album of Twenty Copperplate Engravings, Including Seven Maps]

by Shuntosai Okada

  • very good

Album of 20 copperplate engravings mounted on silver-decorated paper; album measures 159 x 118 mm; images measure approximately 145 x 85 mm. Near fine condition.

Japanese artists began experimenting with copperplate engraving in the late eighteenth century but the method achieved popularity for only a brief period in the mid-1800s, primarily in the work of a Kyoto-based group known as Gengendō. The bulk of their work consisted of detailed small engravings of well-known views and pilgrimage sites, often based on existing popular forms such as classic views, schematic maps, layouts of temple precincts, walking guides, etc. The novelty of the foreign medium and its capability of presenting intense detail in a small format presumably contributed to its popularity, a popularity that was soon supplanted by two other media of Western origin, lithography and photography. (For an excellent examination in historical context, see Fowler, Sherry. "Views of Japanese Temples and Shrines from Near and Far: Precinct Prints of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries." Artibus Asiae 68, no. 2 (2008): 247-85.)

Offered here is an album of twenty copperplates by Okada Shuntosai (fl 1830-1861), a student of Gengendō's founder, Matsumoto Yasuoki (1776-1867). Such albums comprise the bulk of Shuntosai's work in both institutional holdings and on the market, but the sheer number of images in his output and the somewhat random selection and organization of the albums suggest that the prints were usually sold as singles to the Japanese populace and the albums were assembled for collectors or foreigners. Only one print has a romanized caption, SIJOEM TOOCEM for Shuntosai, suggesting that they were primarily aimed at the domestic market.

Several Western institutions have similar albums, including four at the MFA in Boston and one each at five others. The most extensive holdings I have located are in the municipal history museum in the city of Uji, near Kyoto: ten albums with a total of 440 prints, including numerous duplicates. Several have more than the usual twenty prints.

Following is a list of prints in the album, with identifications and dates based on the websites of the Dutch National Museum of World Cultures, the MFA and the Uji museum as well as John Clark, Japanese Nineteenth Century Copperplate Prints (British Museum Occasional Papers 84, 1994):

•Three Views in Three Cities, Edo, Kyoto, Osaka; Shuntosai romanized as "Sijoem Toocem"
•Kamakura, Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine
•Enoshima 186
•Eight Warriors
•Enoshima 1861
•Ise 1854
•Kyoto, Parade Floats of the Gion Festival
•Osaka 1858-61
•Four Seasons in Tokyo
•Nara, Famous Places in the Eastern Hills (Higashiyama)
•A Self-guided Tour of the Yamato Region with Nara and Yoshino, 1849
•Nagoya, Atsuta Shrine (not in any referenced collections)
•Kyoto, Kitano Tenmangu Shrine
•Kyoto, Twelve Attractions
•Yamashiro Region of Kyoto Province 1861
•Ōtani, Spectacles Bridge, 1858
•Kyoto 1861
•Kyoto, Views of Famous Places in the Western Hills
•Nihon Sankei—The Three Views of Japan: Miyajima, Matsushima, •Amanohashidate
•Central Peaks of Mt. Hiko, Tagawa County, Buzen Province

Bookplate of James Graham Goodenough (1830-1875) tipped to front cover. Goodenough joined the Royal Navy at age 14 and served in the Pacific, the South Atlantic, the Baltic, on the China station, and as an observer in the US Civil War before his appointment as commodore of the Australian station in 1873. Active in promoting British expansion in the South Pacific, in 1875 he died of wounds inflicted by poison arrows in the Solomon Islands.

The engraving shows the port and capital of Chios, seen from the east in a bird's-eye view. The town is represented as divided into the strongly fortified Byzantine Kastro and the town itself, which is defended on the landward side by massive watchtowers with a moat and a drawbridge. Windmills line the coast; A canon fire s out to sea from a tower on the sea wall; numerous ships and galleys. Decorative title cartouche The city is often locally referred to as "Chora" (Χώρα; literally meaning "town") or "Kastro" (Κάστρο) to distinguish it from the entirety of the island with which it shares the name. Originally the site of an ancient settlement, the town was first built at the north side of a natural harbour. London: William Mount & Thomas Page, 1734. Copper-engraved sea chart, in excellent condition, apart from an expertly repaired centre fold, and mild creases where the map folded. A very fine sea chart of China's Zhejiang Province, from the celebrated Third Book of 'The English Pilot.' This elegant and large sea chart captures China's modern day Zhejiang province. Located on the East China sea, just below the Yangtze Delta, this region was of major interest to European traders during the eighteenth-century. It features the major port of Zhousan (Chusan), and was the location of the entrance of the Grand Canal of China. The canal, construction of which began in the 5th-century B.C., was then the oldest and longest man-made waterway in the world, which allowed barges to travel hundreds to Beijing. In 1671, the London cartographer John Seller (fl.1664-97) commenced work on The English Pilot, a work that intended to challenge Dutch hegemony in the sea atlas market. Intended to be published in four books… Read More

Nattali and Bond. London. No Date.,Circa 1850. THREE VOLUMES. Tall 8vo (10.2 x 6.6 inches). Text and plates taken from the Ninth edition. Complete set of this famous trilogy, with 80 fine hand-coloured, full page, aquatint plates, the colouring still strong and bright, by Thomas Rowlandson. Some minor spots of foxing to a few leaves in each volume but generally clean and bright copies in the scarce original publisher's brown cloth bindings, with gilt lettering and decoration on spines. Decorative blind stamped panels on boards. Original yellow coated endpapers. Previous owners bookplates to front paste downe endpapers. Some rubbing to top and tail of spines and fore-edges, and a couple of the hinges with neatly repaired splits (about 1.5 inches) but generally these are very good examples. Slight uniform fading to spines but overall a very attractive set of this classic work with Rowlandson's humourous plates. Uncommon in the publishers original decorative cloth bindings.:
