"Stewart was a British army officer who made three sporting trips into the Rocky Mountains in 1832, 1838, and 1842. Webb, the editor, was so impressed with his descriptions of the Indians, that he determined to publish what was originally written 'for the amusement of some young friends on Long Island,' as a true account of 'the native of our forests as he was, and still is.' It has been speculated that Webb, himself, might have been the author, but Camp maintains that only Stewart could have written so detailed a narrative."--Howell.
