Philadelphia: H. C. Carey and I. Lea. Very Good+. 1823. Hardcover. A two-volume first edition of an account of the Long Expedition to the Rocky Mountains by expedition botanist and geologist Edwin James. Compiled from the notes of Major Stephen H. Long, Mr. T. Say, and other gentlemen of the party by Mr. James. This rather scarce set presents the account of the experiences of the Stephen H. Long expedition of 1819-1820, in which Long was sent to find the source of the Platte River in the Rocky Mountains. Lacks the separate accompanying oversize atlas which was issued in 1822 per Howes J.41, who remarks [the expedition was notable in that it supplemented] ". . .earlier discoveries of Pike and of Lewis and Clark, and pronouncing the plains region as nothing but a desert, incapable of cultivation!". --- In maroon half leather and marbled paper-covered boards with gilt-stamped spine titling, four raised bands to spines and marbled endpapers. --- A very nice set, with bright, mostly…

London: Printed for Thomas Wilcox, 1757. First Edition. Boards. Good. 4to. Nineteenth-century half-calf over marbled boards. xii, 255pp. Front board detached along with first two endpapers. Endpapers not original, added later. Some unobtrusive foxing throughout. Lacks the folding frontispiece. Interior is excellent and otherwise complete. This is a rare first edition of the "first and classic history of New York" (Streeter). A foundational text for any collection of books about New York or American colonial history, based on the official records of the administration of New York and on the earlier works of Colden and Charlevoix. The first edition covers history to the year 1732, though later reprints extended this coverage further. Smith was a British loyalist during the Revolutionary War who fled New York for Quebec City, where he became chief justice for all of Lower Canada throughout the late 18th century. Says Larned: "Within the period subsequent to the English Revolution, Smith is still…

Description:
[Vernon, California?]: Pacific Coast League, 1911. Softcover. Very Good. Octavo. [8]pp. Stapled wrappers. One horizontal fold, the front wrap age-toned, some marginal tears on a couple of pages, very good. Program for a game between the Vernon Tigers of Vernon, California, and the Los Angeles Angels. The program features photos of several players, center score card/roster pages with pre-printed players' names, ballpark rules: "Bottle and cushion throwing prohibited," and some amusing baseball related advertising. Founded in 1903, the PCL was the highest level of western baseball until the Dodgers and Giants moved to California in the 1950s. Vernon was one of only two cities in Los Angeles County that was "wet," and with alcoholic beverages as an attraction, the Tigers attracted big crowds by the standards of the day. They weren't bad either, winning three pennants during their 17-year history. Very early memorabilia from the PCL is scarce.

Description:
1848 Mississippi Exploration Indian Wars Color MAP Western Americana Monette'History of the discovery and settlement of the valley of the Mississippi' is the history of the Americas along and around the Mississippi river. It is told primarily from the perspective of the Indian Wars between Native Americans and France, Spain, and Great Britain.
"The first volume is principally occupied with a relation of the French and Spanish discovery of the territory, and the association of the colonial governments of these nations with the Indians, and their wars with the various tribes inhabiting it. Much of the larger portion of Vol. II. is devoted to a narration of the Indian wars of the States bordering the Ohio. The work is probably the best of the numerous class of books on the subject of western history" (Field).
This 1848 edition includes:
·
First Spanish discoveries in Florida 1512 to 1538 --
·
Exploration of the Mississippi River by La Salle: his colony on the Colorado 1673 to 1696 -… Read More
