About This Item
[Bird-in-Hand, Pa.: Neuhauser Bros., c.1890s]. 24pp. Pamphlet. 8 x 5½ inches. Illustrated wrappers; stapled. Soft vertical crease; very good.
C.1890s Cattle and other livestock fence trade catalog issued by Neuhauser Bros., Lancaster County, Pennsylvania farm machinery and hardware merchants.
The Neuhausers entered fence business in 1891, devoting themselves to marketing and selling the "Jones Locked Wire Fence" system with its "stock proof lock," manufactured by the Jones National Fence Company of Columbus Ohio. The catalogue references awards won by the Jones National Fence Company at the Detroit Exposition of 1892 and the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893.
The catalogue, more of a marketing brochure, describes the various gauges of wire used to make the fences, the clamps and crimping tools used to assemble them, and instructions for building, plus a table on spacing and advice on tension bolts. A construction price list of lawn, cemetery, and garden fences, however, is included, prices based on posts and rails being already in place.
The catalogue concludes with solicitation for sales agents with notes on "successful" agents, sales territory, and advertising.
