About This Item
London: Robert Clavell, 1690. Disbound. Good. 31, [1] p. 20 cm. Faint pencil inscription on title page. Some foxing and darkening.
John Ashton was an English courtier and Jacobite conspirator, devoted to the exiled James II and Queen Mary. He and his fellow conspirators hoped to encourage Louis XIV of France to forcibly restore James II to the English throne. Before his execution, Ashton handed the Sheriff of London a letter declaring himself a Protestant happy to lose his life in James II's service. This pamphlet includes the supposed letter itself and a response by Dr. Edward Fowler, Bishop of Gloucester. Fowler considers the letter to be a forgery written by a co-conspirator, portrays it as a manifesto of the Jacobite party, and attempts to explain in detail the lawfulness of William III's accession. Wing F1695.
