Boards are heavily worn and binding has separated from 66 sewn maps and endpapers. Significant signs of wear and/or age. Maps are foxed, but clearly legible. Not an ex-library, book club or remainder copy. Oversized book; S&H will be adjusted.
Marie Joseph Louis Adolphe Thiers 1797-1877 was a French statesman and historian. He was the second elected President of France and the first President of the French Third Republic.
Map plates 20 & 21 are hand colored, double page. Sizes 11" x 18" for the single sheet maps, 22" x 18" for double page maps.
Note second illustration has list of map plates (I'm too lazy to type in 66 French titles). These are quite attractive and remarkably detailed copperplate printed maps. 1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. Item is rare: WordCat locates two copies of this printing (#237747794); none from this date are for sale. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Included in 'Medical' history as this pamphlet does more than hint at the health problems of tobacco users.

The plates and engravings are same topics and locations as the 1842 edition but are by a different engraver. True first edition is 1835 in either New York or Pennsylvania. This is a challenging book to list, since it has appeared in so many printings, and since evidently these two volumes were followed by three more in English translation (with the French original appearing in a 20 volume set!) The book in hand has 969 pages, and ends with the Treaties of Tilsit, if that's any clue as to whether it would be of use to you. It is not illustrated, but does appear to give a blow-by-blow account of everything it touches on. This copy is beautifully bound in full leather, which has held up very well, and has gorgeous marbled endpapers and edges. HOWEVER, alas, the front board is fully detached. This is a big flaw, but otherwise, this is an excellent reading copy, since the paper is not foxed or damaged in the least, and although the print is small, it is highly legible. .

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
