About This Item

Little Rock, 1977. unbound. fine. Outstanding and humorous autographed letter signed "Bill" as Arkansas Attorney General. 1 page on "Office of the Attorney General" stationery, 10.5 x 7.25 inches, Little Rock, July 5, [1977]. Written while running for Governor of Arkansas to a Mr. Morton, who was a staunch supporter of the Republican candidate, a Texarkana farmer named A. Lynn Lowe. As the story goes, several of Morton's friends, knowing of his conservative sentiments, played a practical joke and erected a large "Clinton for Governor" billboard on his property and then proceeded to undertake a letter-writing campaign averring to Mr. Morton's unconditional support of candidate Clinton. Morton wrote to Clinton protesting the act and the future President responded as follows: "I was pleased and amused to get your letter. I have friends who play tricks on me too and I guess we should just laugh about it. On a more serious note, I appreciate your compliments about my work as attorney general and your active support of Mr. Lowe, which is good citizenship. I would say, though, that if you think I've been a good attorney general, you'll probably think I'm a good governor, after the day to day performance wipes away the preconception of extreme 'liberalism' which seem always to be the main thrust of political campaign against me. As a matter of fact, with the possible exception of some energy matters, I can't think of any issue I'm more 'liberal' on than your friend Ray Thornton whom I also admire very much." Four months after he wrote this letter, Clinton became the youngest Governor in the history of the United States at the age of 31. Fine condition.
