About This Item
Berlin: S. Fischer, 1918. First edition. Hardcover. g. Octavo. XXXXIV, 611, [5]pp. Original half cloth over printed paper covered boards. Ribbon marker. Thomas Mann wrote this essay as a riposte to his brother Heinrich's criticism of Germany and the war. Mann's essay justified the authoritarianism and inward "culture" of Germany against the moralistic "civilization" and democracy of England and France. Published in 1918, Mann later repudiated the ideas exposed here. Front corners heavily rubbed. Upper corners bumped, thus slightly affecting pages throughout. Previous owner's ex-libris on inside of front cover. Very minor and sporadic age-toning along paper margin. Rear hinge starting. Text in German, gothic script. Binding in overall fair to good-, interior in good+ to very good condition.
