Inverness: Caledonian Hotel. Very Good-. 1924. Ephemera. Printed card menu with color image of a woman wearing hunting clothes on a white horse leaping a fence. Printed in blue at top "Caledonian Hotel, / Inverness" folowed by "Menu" printed in red. On rear panel "Wisdon of the People" with eleven bits of popular lore, e.g., "Any wind will suit a man who prefers to drift." Tiny closed tear at left edge, ink a bit faded, otherwise very good condition. Hand written entries read: "Hotch Potch // Halibut Hollandaise // Risoles of Chicken // Roast Beef // Pears Morielle // Croutes Blanc Mall. The Caledonian Hotel was built in 1780 as a meeting place for members of the St John's Masonic Lodge. It was known as The Mason's Hotel or the Mason Lodge Hotel until it was renamed the Caledonian Hotel in 1825. The building was enlarged in 1822 and 1882 and was renowned for its ballroom. At its height, its visitors included members of the British Royal family and other European nobility. The original hotel was demolished in 1966 and replaced by a new building of the same name. .
