Translated by Richard Aldington "Candide" is a satire first published in 1759. It is the story of a young man leading a sheltered life, being schooled in optimism by his mentor Professor Pangloss. The protagonist loses his sheltered life, experiences hardships, and becomes disillusioned. Life leads him to a philosophy of pragmatism.

Synopsis

Ever since 1759, when Voltaire wrote "Candide" in ridicule of the notion that this is the best of all possible worlds, this world has been a happier place for readers. Voltaire wrote it in three days, and many generations have found that its laughter does not grow old.
