This was published in association with the Philadelphia Museum of Art, This volume was published in conjunction with the exhibition Cezanne held at the Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais, Paris, September 25, 1995, to January 7, 1996. The Tate Gallery, London, February 8 to April 28, 1996, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, May 30 to August 18, 1996. Paul Cézanne (19 January 1839 - 22 October 1906) was a French artist and Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th-century conception of artistic endeavor to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century. Cézanne's exploratory brushstrokes are highly characteristic and clearly recognizable. He used planes of colour and small brushstrokes that build up to form complex fields. The paintings convey Cézanne's intense study of his subjects. Cézanne is said to have formed the bridge between late 19th-century Impressionism and the early 20th century's new line of artistic enquiry, Cubism. Both Matisse and Picasso are said to have remarked that Cézanne "is the father of us all." This catalogue offers an exploration of Cezanne's work. It includes catalogue entries on nearly 230 paintings, watercolors and drawings. These works are all reproduced in colour and are accompanied by informative commentaries, further insights are provided by comparative illustrations of almost another 300 works. The book traces Cezanne's stylistic evolution from the early dark and violent canvases to the luminous works that gave different qualities to Impressionism, and finally to the late paintings that broke fresh ground. Also explored here is the artist's preoccupation with several themes and motifs - Mont Sainte-Victoire, bathers and still life. The comprehensive review of the critical response to the artist's work reveals the many interpretations of Cezanne's legacy that have been put forward. A chronology details the life and career of the artist.
