About This Item

New York: Henry S. Goodspeed & Co., 1873. with an Introduction by Dr. L.P. Brockett 8vo size decorative cloth; 1,158 pages. Every page has a beautifully decorated engraved border: angels, cherubim, seraphim at the top and an open bible centered among flourishes at the bottom. There are also several hundred full page black and white engraved illustrations. Dark brown endpapers. Covers are brown cloth with bevelled edges. They are decorated with gilt titles and illustrations and black decorations. Ingram Cobbin (1777 - 1851) was an English minister. When ill heath forced his retirement from the pulpit, he turned to writing hymns and biblical and scholastic works. Book is partly disbound with front cover detached bound to front endpaper and back cover partly detached. Worn corners and head and heel of spine and to detached areas. We note finger marks or ink transfer to several pages; name and notes on ffep; two small amounts of soil on back cover, a small mottled area on front cover and a tiny spot on bottom. Foxing was noted on some pages. Leaves are pressed into the seam of pages 342-343 and have caused some discoloration. A child's cartoon is also tucked into the book. Pages are firmly bound and the lovely steel cut illustrations make this worthy of restoring. Family historians: the name on the ffep is Harriett Hoefflinger. In photographing the book, we noted a lock of hair tucked into pages 574/575. Thanks for shopping with us! 100% of your purchase benefits charity and supports literacy and lifelong learning.. Decorative Cloth. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
