About This Item

N.p. [China], middle of the 19th century.

Horizontal scroll painted on paper measuring 10,63 m long x 32 cm high.

Superb horizontal Chinese scroll painting representing 62 horsemen from the Mongolian steppes.

The horsemen watercolored in bright colors measure around 13 x 6,5 cm each.

They are surmounted with a small handwritten caption on yellow paper mounted on the upper edge (8 horsemen have lost their caption).

The Mongolian horsemen are represented in different poses, some of them practicing equestrian archery, some others equestrian games with varied acrobatics.

The scroll offers a range of extremely diverse shades, and more particularly superb purples, pinks, sky blues and royal blues, greens, browns, beiges or greys for the traditional clothes of the horsemen also comprising hats, generally red, as well as green or red for the saddlery.

The horses colours are also varied with shades ranging from white to mid-grey or to buckskin.

Gorgeous Chinese parchment impressive for its format (10,63 m long) depicting a succession of horsemen from the Mongolian steppe in varied artistic poses, lavishly watercoloured in bright and shimmering colours.

A few tears in the upper and lower edges of the scroll, the first 5 watercolours present small defects in the image area.
