About This Item
Baton Rouge, Louisiana State University Press, 1943, hardcover, xiii-155 pp, First Edition, First Printing, Very Good in Poor dustjacket. Straight tight and clean with no markings, slight spine-end and corner wear. Dustjacket unclipped bearing original price, large edge chips, tears, age-darkened, split at spine fold but still displays well in archival Brodart sleeve. The author attempts to determine why theatrical tragedy exists in certain historical periods and not in others. In particular he examines Periclean Greece and Elizabethan England focusing on; the refusal of poets to moralize or propagandize, the avoidance of softened diction, the looking upon Evil with fearlessness, and an awareness of dignity through suffering. Appended - Coda: The Present and the Future.
