In the original pale blue dustwrapper with price ($1.00) still intact to inner front flap. Just a hint of fading to the blank spine but overall a fine copy in a very near fine dustwrapper. Berryman's first book, issued in New Direction's Poet of the month series.

Illustrated with a colour frontis and forty nine full colour plates, all mounted onto thick art paper pages at back of book, each one with a printed tissue guard. Decorative endpapers with map of Kensington Gardens. A near fine, bright and clean copy throughout in original russet cloth binding with gilt stamped decoration and lettering to front board and spine. Very minor rubbing to hinges and a small bump to the lower front board at the outer corner, but overall a beautiful clean copy of this classic. Among the very best of Rackham's work.

Hurst and Blackett, Limited. London. 1913. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. 8vo. viii.376,24 pp publishers adverts for Autumn 1913, including blurb for this book with the title The Mysterious Mr. Noel. This was changed to Balaoo before publication but after the adverts were typeset. Very good bright, tight copy with previous owners name written neatly in ink to front blank endpaper. Some light foxing to a few pages but still generally a nice fresh copy. Publishers red cloth with blind ruled border and gilt lettering to front board. Spine lettered and ruled in gilt. A particularly nice copy of this rare title by the Author of The Phantom of the Opera. Originally published in French in 1912, Balaoo is the story of a Monkey who is brought up by a Scientist as a human, Mr. Noel. He is educated and can read and write and wears the latest Paris fashions. Balaoo is suspected of committing many crimes, culminating in the kidnapping of Mlle. A fine set of true first editons of this hugely popular trilogy. There is some confusion about a probable trial issue dustwrapper for the first title, with no advance praise notices on the lower panel and lacking the blue capital letter 'A' at the start of the blurb inside the front flap. This wrapper was not officially issued with the published book. The first edition wrapper, as issued on day of publication, has the price of $21.00 on the inner front flap and the number code '5/92' at the bottom of the inner rear flap. The wrapper on All the Pretty horses in this set has both of these points.

A rare bibliographical variant, printed in black on white paper cover plus 4pp rather than than the dark burgundy ink on light grey or brown paper noted in the bibliography (Richards; A269 - note). This copy also varies from Richards A269 with the addition of a portrait frontis of Kipling after an illustration by M. Webb which is printed on stiff dark grey paper. The pages are then bound in a contemporary full burgundy soft suede binding with red, white and blue silk tie to the spine. Front panel lettered in gilt and with blind stamped line ruled border with floral corner pieces. Neat three line inscription to the front free endpaper. Some fraying to the tie-cord but still holding the text pages tightly. A little rubbing to the suede binding and a split to the top inch of the hinge, but overall a lovely presentation of this important work. A fine clean and fresh copy in original black and red snakeskin patterned cloth, with the spine lettered in gilt. Some very minor rubbing to the extremities of the cloth and a hint of fading to the red of the spine but overall a near fine example with the gilt still very bright and vibrant.
