About This Item

London, 1790. Cornelii Nepotis Vitae Excellentium Imperatorum: Cum Verifione Angelica, in qua Verbum de Verbo, quantum fieri potuit, redditure: Notis quoque Anglicis, & Indice Locupletissimo or Cornelius Nepos's Lives of the Excellent Commanders: with an English Translation as Literal as possible with English notes and a large index by John Clarke (late master of the Publick Grammar School in Hull [England]) In Pursuance of the Method of teaching the Latin Tongue, laid down by him in his Essay upon Education. Private Press: J.F. and C. Rivington, et al; London; 1790; Fourteenth (14th)Edition A copy of this volume is in the collection of the National Trust; Carlyle's House, London. 8vo size full calf leather; 280 pages. Red title block on spine with bright gilt titles and decorations. The long "S" is used throughout the text. The pages are styled in two columns, with the Latin language text on the left side and the English language text on the right side. The English text provides the translation, but not in a line by line format. The English text often appears to take up slightly more text block space. Contents include: Miltiades Themistocles Aristides Pausanias Cimon Lysander Alcibiades Thrasybulus Conon Dion Iphicrates Chabrias Timotheus Datames Epaminondas Pelopidas Agesilaus Eumenes Phocion Timoleon Reges Hamilcar Hannibal M. Portius Cato T. Pomponius Atticus Disbound: the back board is missing and front board is detached. Wear to leather. Spine cover is firmly in place and the sewn binding is firmly intact. There is some minor chipping to head and heel of leather spine. Tanned pages, darker at margins and darkly tanned margin to inside cover. There is light soil or foxing throughout. Pages 37-48 have a small dark spot on the bottom edge and pages 112-119 have some dark spots in the margin. There is discoloration to some page margins which are likely antiquarian fingermarks. There may be other spots within the text which we have not noted. There is a water stain to outside pages and about a dozen pages have a light water stain in the margins. There are some previously folded page corners. We noted a chipped corner to one page. Pencilled bookseller's marks on fep. Thanks for shopping with us! 100% of your purchase benefits charity and supports literacy and lifelong learning.. 14th. Full-Leather. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
