About This Item

N.p.: Privately printed, 1924. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 18 cm; 65 pages, half-tone portrait frontispiece and 12 half-tone plates. Bound in flexible leather. Mild wear. Presentation copy inscribed by the author to Naval Commander Eugene E. Wilson (1904-1970) at the Philadelphia Club, January 22, 1953. Ex-libris of Eugene E. Wilson Collection of the United States Naval Academy Library. (The Nimitz Library has declined ownership.)

Collection of verse written to approximate the accented English of French-Indian voyageurs and coureurs du bois, or, as the author states in his introductory note, "half-breed Indian guides." The Francophone pronounciation is represented in the orthography, so interdental fricatives (th-sounds) are written as "d," final consonants are dropped, and the sound of "er" in "water" is made long: "An' den dere air de rapides... Dey make de rivaar music...." Accompanied by the author's photographs of Canadian lakes and forest. OCLC locates only four copies: Princeton, Brown, Alberta, and Toronto.

About Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio

Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio owes its name and its inspiration to the traditional Italian studio bibliografico. These small antiquarian bookshops, typically run by individuals who combine deep scholarship with a love of the printed object, remind us that underlying the words "study" and "studio" is the Latin term for zeal and devotion, studium. Since 1993, my goal has been to match discerning collectors with extraordinary books and manuscripts.
