Lyon : Antoine Chard, 1625 An exceptionally rare work on gynaecology by Lovys de Serres - a doctor practicing in Lyon in the 17th century. Little is known about de Serres - his dates are said to be 1588 to circa 1656. He translated a number of works and authored 2 books. He is cited by one source as being the first author to devote an entire work to gynaecology. This copy is in a newer full leather binding with gilt decorated raised bands to the spine and extensive gilt decoration to the boards. The binding is in fine condition. The marbled endpapers are new. With decorative title page in red and black inks; dedication with decorative headpiece and initial capital 5pp; preface with decorative initial capital 3pp; 'Approbation des Docteurs' 1pp; Extraict du Privilege du Roy 2pp; corrections 1p; contents listing with decorative initial capital 2 pp; text pp 1-486 with headpiece and initial capitals. Contents are in overall good condition. Some sections are browned and most have brown toning to page edges. There is occasional marking. There is some worm damage - mainly to bottom margins - with some repaired.

Edges of title page are age-toned. Book plate re-mounted on inside front cover belonging to Clements C. Fry, M.D. (1892-1955) Professor of Psychiatry at Yale and a well known collector of medical prints. Bound in full modern calf done after an early style. Old spine label is preserved. John Haslam (1764-1844) was an Apothecary or Medical Officer at Bethlem Hospital (Bedlam) and afterwards the Governor of St. Luke's Hospital. Haslam was one of the most knowledgeable practitioners in his field. However, according to Hunter and Macaplpine his attitudes toward patients were rather "harsh and unfeeling." In 1816 scandals arose over poor patient care at Bethlem Hospital and Haslam was dismissed from his position (perhaps unfairly). The "Observations on Madness" was first published in 1798. Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Danielem Elsevirium, 1671 A very good copy of the '3rd and Final' edition of Richard Lower's major treatise on the working of the heart and lungs. Richard Lower (1631-1691) was the first person to perform a blood transfusion, reporting in 1666 that blood had been successfully transferred between 2 dogs. Shortly afterwards he carried out an experiment to transfuse some blood from a sheep to a man - with some hopes that the gentleness of the lamb would be carried in the blood. He counted Thomas Willis (founder of the Royal Society) and Robert Hooke as close associates and was a follower of William Harvey. Tractatus de Corde (roughly translated as Treatment of the Heart) was his most important work, detailing his experimental surgery and findings. This copy, in contemporary full leather binding, formed part of the Selbourne Library - acquired by the late Hugh Selbourne - and has the Selbourne Library stamp to the verso of the title page, and the bottom margin of p 51.… Read More

A Note From Fred Rogers: A child's first visit with a pediatrician usually comes soon after birth. It may be months or even years later, though, that a child first shows fear about going to see a doctor. The worry of an injection or some other unfamiliar medical procedure can trigger that fear.
