In selecting Temesvar 1912 as ETV's lead off volume, the editor has chosen a tournament with is seldom available to the collecting fraternity. Scarcity alone, it must be emphasized, doesn't determine the value of a tournament book. In addition to being a scarce tournament title, Temesvar 1912 features a coterie of Hungarian masters destined to play an important role in the early 29th Century European chess history. The names of Richard Reti and Julius Breyer (mercurial, surprise tournament winner), together with such recognized masters as Lajos Asztalos, Zsigmond Barasz, Zoltan von Balla, Kornel Havasi and Károly Sterk, clearly qualify Temesvar as a significant event. The editor elected to annotate fifteen of the some 105 games played in the Second Hungarian Chess Congress. The major tournament can be described as a mixed tournament, in which six acknowledge masters were to be found among the fifteen participants. The results were surprising. The young Breyer, won the first prize without loss a game, after leading for thirteen straight rounds. Second was Asztalos and with this win attained master title in the Hungarian Chess Federation. Third through fourth was shared by Zoltan von Bella with Lajos Merenyi.
