About This Item
London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1873. First edition of the leading Irish economist's penultimate work, here the copy of the late Irish economist Robert Dennis Collison Black (1922-2008), with his ownership inscription "R. D. C. Black, Department of Economics, Queen's University, Belfast. [&] Dublin, 17 July 1947" to half-title. Black is best-remembered for editing and publishing the Papers and Correspondence of William Stanley Jevons. Cairnes (1823-1875), often described as the "last of the classical economists", was a key Irish political figure who developed and critiqued the work of John Stewart Mill. This edition collects together various essays which Cairnes published in periodicals over the course of 14 years. Octavo. Original brown pebble-grain cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt and black, panelling to front cover in black and rear cover in blind, black endpapers. With publisher's catalogue at rear dated January 1875. A little worn and shaken. A good copy. Einaudi 785; Mattioli 516.
