Original 6-page typescript (carbon copy) manuscript of Johns' 'Heroes of Africa' (a draft of the Chapter 'The Scot Who Walked Alone' - Chapter 4 of 'Biggles Book of Heroes' with significant similarities, but also a large number of textual / content differences). With a couple of pen corrections which may or may not be authorial. Undated, but c1959.

Captain Edward William Hooper [1839-1901] also known as E. W. Hooper, was aide-de-camp on the staff of Union General Rufus Saxton during the American Civil War, from 1862 to 1865. Hooper also served as private secretary to General Saxton, when he was given the rank of Captain. General Rufus Saxton [1824-1908] commanded the defences of Harpers Ferry in 1862, where he earned the Medal of Honor. Author's first novel. Blue and yellow cloth with dustjacket illustrated by Roy Lichtenstein on the front and Andy Warhol on the back. Light edgewear, good hinges, firm text block, name and address written inside front cover beneath the dustjacket flap, embossed stamp with the same address at lower corners of front free endpaper and half-title, no other markings. The mylar protected dustjacket has edgewear and a slightly darkened but legible spine, some light shelf soil to the white background, chips to spine ends and lower corner of rear panel, none of the chips interfering with dustjacket design. . A collection of recipes and advice for pleasurable entertaining, from a woman of stature, descendant of Roger Puleston of Emral, Worthenbury. She spent her later years in Monaco, and travelled in high circles there, in the book offering thanks to the Marches Donghi for supplying recipes to this compilation. The recipes reflect Monaco, offering Tacchino all Storiona, Sole Lucullus, Zabaglione, and Oeufs Poches Marquise, for example. The author was the last Puleston to possess the trove of important manuscript on 16th and 17th century Wales and Ireland known as the Puleston Mss. "On the death of Mrs. Elfrida Puleston in Monaco in 1946 the family papers passed to H.S.H. the Prince of Monaco, whose archivist later arranged their transfer to the British Museum." 1840. A 10 1/2" x 8 1/4" pressed board box with applied lithograph on the front cover depicting two young women musing while standing arm in arm in a rose garden. The surprise within the box is 20 trinket boxes each 2 5/8" x 1 1/2". Each pressed board box is covered with embossed gilt paper with an applied litho on the top of predominantly a woman or women posed in outdoor scenes. Two of the boxes depicting courting couples. One is in the style of the Marie Taglioni fairy. Each box designed with the sole purpose of retaining ones tiny keepsakes and treasures. A joy to be received by any young woman. One box with-3 corner repair. Light warping from storage in dry environment.
