Two folding maps: a frontispiece world map (missing outer half) and a map of North America and the Caribbean islands. Howes M850 notes that this was the first American school geography and first American book describing the Western country. Sabin 50936. Interesting opinions and observations throughout the text, including description of indigenous people, mention of the venomous spit of South American llamas, Mexicos floating gardens, American birds, alligators, and other wildlife, as well as commentary about African countries on the Slave Coast to make some amends [which] could be made for past treachery to the natives. Morse is best known as a minister and educator, as well as the metaphorical father of American geography and biological father of Samuel F. B. Morse. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 431 pages .
