Lithographed title with large vignette, letterpress "Table of Contents," and 73 hand-colored lithographed maps, charts and city plans. Three-quarter red morocco over marbled boards, large red morocco title label on front cover, elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt. Spine and corners renewed in red leather. Boards rubbed and scuffed at edges. Maps in fine condition. Overall, a fine copy. A very nice copy of this very scarce atlas, with hand-colored maps of all the individual States and Territories, and including the rare and famous map of "Oregon, Upper California & New Mexico" showing the large yellow-colored area in California labeled "Gold Region." The Atlas concentrates on the American continent with 43 maps of the area, including a fine double-page coast-to-coast map of the United States. This 10.5 inch quarto is in very good condition, sound hinges, 171 pp. with all 22 maps (several folding), plans and views in very good or better condition on heavy paper. Contemporary calf boards with original marbeled pastedowns, two title pages (one decorative with attribution to Bellin), "Tables des Titres" and "Table des Cartes, Plans et Vues." Six compartment, banded spine, with red, gilt title label.Triple (French), gilt fillets on front and rear boards. Bellin was the first chief hydrographic engineer of the French Hydrographic Office (see Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers, revised ed.). Ref: Beinecke, Lesser Antilles Collection, 215; Sabin 4553. 1828 Japanese Illustrated MAP Edo Five Routes Dochu Samurai Woodblock Japan

An interesting 19th century woodblock-print of a map of the Dochu, published in the late modern period when travel to shrines and temples were flourishing for ordinary people. the revised version or the same route by Ichizaemon Kichimonjiya of Yoshimojiya Saemon and Suharaya Shigebe and others "Dochu German Guide Map" or "National Route Guide Map." It is a maze-type road map of the most popular type that is easy to fold and carry. This 'Dochu map' (Guide map) published during the Edo period is printed on both sides with a wooden print on both sides depicting the Edo Five Routes where feudal lords with their samurai had to travel every other year to the capital following these routes. It is quite large measuring at ~101cm x 30cm.

This 19th century edition map includes the names of post towns on the routes with the distance between the towns and the fare for baggage based upon whether it was carried by horse or man!

A very fine sea chart of China's Zhejiang Province, from the celebrated Third Book of 'The English Pilot.' This elegant and large sea chart captures China's modern day Zhejiang province. Located on the East China sea, just below the Yangtze Delta, this region was of major interest to European traders during the eighteenth-century. It features the major port of Zhousan (Chusan), and was the location of the entrance of the Grand Canal of China. The canal, construction of which began in the 5th-century B.C., was then the oldest and longest man-made waterway in the world, which allowed barges to travel hundreds to Beijing. In 1671, the London cartographer John Seller (fl.1664-97) commenced work on The English Pilot, a work that intended to challenge Dutch hegemony in the sea atlas market. Amsterdam: Schenk and Valk, 1708. Very good, minimal foxing, early color copperplate from this 1708 (original version published in 1660 by Jansson) Schenk/Valk issue of (Andreas Cellarius') "Harmonia Macrocosmica Seu Atlas Universalis Et Novus." The striking image measures 41 x 51 cm on a sheet 50 x 59 cm. Numerous cherubim surrond the eastern hemispheric view, which is also divided into frigid, termperate, tropical and torrid zones. There are separate armillary and habitat zonal spheres in the lower corners. Ref: Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, Cel.3. There are bilateral, faint water-stains in the pink circular band surrounding the map image..
