A vigorous decunciation of the treatment of Black Americans in the early 20th century. Author starts with the Bible against lynching, then an account of the history of freedom and lynching, the labor market for Black Americans, emigration, better treatment of Blacks in the north, voting and disenfranchisement, and what to expect in the future.
"For it is useless to tell a man that he is free when he is being shot at from ambush. And Negro men who aspired to be leaders were shot everywhere nearly. Many were killed publicly. Many were so intimidated as to leave for other parts."
