About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape, 1969. First edition. Cloth. Very Good/Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 5.5". None. A first edition of Kingsley Amis' only foray into supernatural horror. Featuring the original illustrated dustwrapper designed by Colin Andrews. A Times Literary Supplement reviewer described The Green Man as "three genres of novel in one": ghost story, moral fable, and comic novel. The novel reflects Amis' willingness to experiment with genre novels (e.g., The Alteration (science fiction/alternate history), or Colonel Sun: a James Bond Adventure) while displaying many of the characteristics of his conventional novels, both in superficial aspects such as fogeyishness and problems with alcohol, and in more substantive aspects such as a self-reflective observation of human cruelty and selfishness in everyday relations. In original cloth binding with original unclipped illustrated dustwrapper. Externally, smart. Some light sunning to the extremities. Dustwrapper with light rubbing to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, though with some light spotting to the textblock edge and endpapers. Ink marks and signature to the front free endpaper. Very Good

Reviews

On Jul 31 2007, W. Fraser Sandercombe said:
During the 1950s, after the publication of Lucky Jim, Kingsley Amis was known as one of The Angry Young Men. Some of the of the anger may be gone, but the wit is still there. This a funny, literate and satirical ghost story, although the ghost isn't the protagonist's main problem. That seems to be to find a way to get his wife, his girlfriend, and himself, in the same bed at the same time...
