FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE (1903). 8vo, 190 x 125 mm, 7½ x 5 mm, deluxe binding, wine red fine ribbed cloth, bevelled boards, ornate gilt decoration to spine: 4 double ruled gilt rectangles, the largest with 7 gilt flowers, lettered gilt on spine, gilt single ruled vertical rectangle next to spine on upper cover enclosing 10 gilt flowers, gilt title and author on upper cover in large blindstamped rectangle, tiny blindstamped ornament under title, all edges gilt, pages: 205 + 2, printed on pale pink paper. 8 very good colour plates, title page printed red and black. Neat faint owner stamp on front pastedown and half-title, margin edges slightly browned throughout. Otherwise near Fine very bright copy. This deluxe first issue is uncommon and is not described by Latimore and Haskell or Riall who list as the first a copy without bevelled boards, gilt decoration on covers or spine, or gilt edges.
