About This Item

UK: Gollancz, 1989. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett First Edition Gollancz 1989. A near fine copy that has no previous owner's name inscriptions or markings. Very faint pencil price to ffep. Contents clean and unblemished throughout. Covers without bumping to corners. In a near fine dust jacket. Not price clipped and with no fading or toning to spine. In the anarchic city of Ankh-Morpork, simmering tensions ignite into chaos when a dragon descends upon the streets, breathing fire and demanding a throne. This unexpected arrival becomes a pawn in the schemes of the Ebon Night, a secret monastic order hungry for power. They plan to install a puppet king under their control, using the dragon's fury to rally the masses. Into this maelstrom stumbles the ragtag Night Watch, Ankh-Morpork's barely-functioning police force. Led by the cynical Captain Sam Vimes, a man fueled by whiskey and an unwavering sense of justice, the Watch becomes an unlikely obstacle to the Ebon Night's plot. Along the way, they gain a new recruit in Carrot Ironfoundersson, a dwarf-raised human with the strength of ten men and the guilelessness of a newborn puppy. As the city teeters on the brink of revolution, Vimes and his motley crew unravel the Ebon Night's conspiracy. They navigate through a labyrinth of political intrigue, trollish bureaucracy, and even the Unseen University's library, guarded by an orangutan with teeth the size of daggers. Through it all, Vimes learns to believe in the potential of the Watch, inspiring unlikely loyalty in his jaded recruits and proving that even a ramshackle force can face down a fire-breathing dragon and a scheming cult. Guards! Guards! is a hilarious and thrilling adventure, packed with Terry Pratchett's signature wit and social commentary. It's a tale of redemption and found family, where a dragon becomes a symbol of hope, a corrupt police force discovers its backbone, and a man named Vimes proves that even in the darkest corners of Ankh-Morpork, there's always room for a bit of order, a good drink, and a dragon-slaying story to tell.

Synopsis

Here there be dragons...and the denizens of Ankh-Morpork wish one huge firebreather would return from whence it came. Long believed extinct, a superb specimen of draco nobilis ("noble dragon" for those who don't understand italics) has appeared in Discworld's greatest city. Not only does this unwelcome visitor have a nasty habit of charbroiling everything in its path, in rather short order it is crowned King (it is a noble dragon, after all...).
