About This Item

Melbourne, South Yarra: Hardie Grant, 2002. 1st ed.. Paperback octavo, very good condition, maps, black & white text-illustrations, inside covers illustrated, pages lightly toned, minor edgewear. 269 pp. This book is the story of Alexander Peace and his seven convict mates who escaped from gaol in Sarah Island, Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania), in 1822. They set out on a terrible journey that led to starvation and cannibalism. The author has written a story of physical hardship and pathological behaviour in contrast to current beautiful landscape of Tasmania. This is a tale of violence, escape and murder, told with wit and a keen eye for the quirks and follies of human nature.
