About This Item

Trade paperback, very little wear. 246 pages. A 13-year-old environmentalist discovers a rare sea creature on the shores of Puget Sound and becomes a national phenomenon. If I had less already on my reading list, I'd be interested in reading this just to find out how that works. As a biologist myself, I know some people who have discovered previously unknown species and had the honor of naming them, but becoming a "national phenomenon" as a result never actually happened. I guess it's because they weren't living in a novel. I've always had that "suspension of disbelief" problem... Anyway, the book is almost like new, and any novel that involves marine zoology has got to be interesting.

Synopsis

A poignant coming-of-age story and a gripping novel of natural wonder. One unforgettable night, thirteen-year-old Miles goes to the flats near his home in search of shellfish, only to discover something startling and remarkable: a giant squid. Instantly he becomes a local celebrity and is pursued by TV crews urging him to explain the phenomenon. His psychic friend Florence predicts that even more astonishing discoveries are to come, indicators of the highest tide in fifty years. Yet Miles worries more about matters closer to home: will his passion for his ex-babysitter Angie go unrequited? Will his arguing parents divorce? Is everything, even the bay, shifting from him?
