About This Item
Tight, square, uncreased spine has some sunning and a small area of very light soiling. Former owner name to the half-title, but interior is else clean and unmarked. Light to moderate wear to the covers, including bumped corners and areas of subtle creasing and rubbing. According to Secker & Warburg, who published the first edition of this war chronicle in April 1938 and who was known at the time for its uniquely coexistent anti-fascist and anti-communist stances, 'Homage was begun in February [1937] in the trenches, written on scraps, the backs of envelopes, toilet paper.' These notes evolved into an article, 'Eyewitness in Barcelona', that was at first rejected by the New Statesman (Editor Kingsley Amis said it 'could cause trouble') and would later be expanded into this book, also initially turned down by Orwell's longtime publisher, Gollancz, due to its critique of Spanish Stalinists. It wasn't published in the US until 1952: this classic paperback edition, with intro by Lionel Trilling, features a tastefully gory cover design by Ken Braren and drop-shadow, slab-serif title page and chapter headings. 232 pp.
