New York: Harcourt Brace and Company, 1957. Stated First Edition 8vo size blue clothbound hardcover with dust jacket; pages From jacket: "The 20 stories in this collection range in mood from humor through sentiment to outright tragedy, and in setting from New England to New Orleans. Among them are a detective tale, a miniature suspense drama, the account of an attempted prison break, a moving narrative of the Civil War. But despite their variety, each of them bears the distinctive stamp of a man who has won a reputation not only as critic and teacher, but as an eminent American poet." Mark van Doren (1894-1972) winner the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1940, was an author and a professor of English literature at Columbia University. In addition to poetry and short stories, van Doren wrote several novels and many books on literary criticism. Edgewear, minor chipping to jacket; sunned spine and sunning to jacket. There is some light foxing to inside flaps of jacket and endpapers and either small spots or foxing to inside seam of front cover. Two tiny spots on outside pages and some foxed spots on top of book. Interior pages appear clean. . First. Cloth. Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
