About This Item

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1909. First edition. Very good.. First edition of this historical overview and contemporary portrait of social, religious, and domestic life in Turkey of the early 20th century. Illustrated study of Turkish cultural and domestic life, by a noted folklorist, travel writer, and translator of Greek poetry; Garnett's other scholarly works included THE WOMEN AND FOLKLORE OF TURKEY and several studies of Greek folk songs. While not wholly free of bias, Garnett takes care to situate Turkish women's dress and traditions in cultural context, without the Orientalizing mystification common to Anglophone travel writers of the period, and makes a particular point of discussing Turkish women's political interests and the degree to which Turkish politics did involve women. This volume was issued as part of Macmillan's 'Home Life' series on domestic life and culture in many nations, designed to appeal to the curious layperson and particularly the woman reader. Series volumes are visually distinguished by their uniform blue and gilt bindings, but were written by various authors, connected by serious attention to the domestic sphere of their subject nation. 7.5'' x 4.5''. Original blue cloth with decorative gilt stamping to front board and spine. 21 plates, including frontispiece. 296 pages. Spine lightly sunned. Small bookseller label mounted to front free endpaper; leaf identifying the volume as former property of the John Eliot Literary Society mounted to rear endpaper. Some foxing to textblock, primarily in gutters. Light wear and scuffing to cloth.
