Illustrated study of Turkish cultural and domestic life, by a noted folklorist, travel writer, and translator of Greek poetry; Garnett's other scholarly works included THE WOMEN AND FOLKLORE OF TURKEY and several studies of Greek folk songs. While not wholly free of bias, Garnett takes care to situate Turkish women's dress and traditions in cultural context, without the Orientalizing mystification common to Anglophone travel writers of the period, and makes a particular point of discussing Turkish women's political interests and the degree to which Turkish politics did involve women. This volume was issued as part of Macmillan's 'Home Life' series on domestic life and culture in many nations, designed to appeal to the curious layperson and particularly the woman reader.
