1851 HUGE Illustrated London News Moby Dick 1st Melville 1851 Insurrection

A rare mid-19th-century issue of 'The Illustrated London News' bound in a beautiful, leather binding.

This series of issues from 1851 to 1852 covers a wide variety of important topics, however, none are as noteworthy as the inclusion of one of the earliest reviews of the famed Herman Melville novel 'Moby Dick', which had only been released two weeks prior to this issue of 'Illustrated London News'. Other interesting topics and illustrations include:

· Inventions

o The lottery drawing wheels

o Sewing machine mechanics

o Pressure engines, drills

o Telescope, stereoscope improvements

· Sea voyages, shipwrecks, attacks by whales

· Full-page printings of music – piano, vocal scores

· Games, chess moves

· Survey of the political career of Louis Bonaparte (p.683)

o 1851 Insurrection, French Coup d'etat

· Bombardment of Salé, looting of French cargo ships in Morocco

· Illustrations of the updated House of Commons

· Account of Albert Smith's ascent of Mont Blanc

v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
