Palermo: G. M. Mayda, 1576. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Two parts in one. 4to (203x147 mm). [8], 312, [32] pp.; 205, [15] pp., woodcut device of Justice on title and on QQ6r, printer's device on cc4r, 3 full-page engravings in part 1 on t4v, S2v, CC2v, very minor browning and spotting. Contemporary vellum. An excellent copy of a rare work. ---- Durling 2547; Waller 5068; Wellcome I, 3417; Hirsch-H. III, 374. - First edition. Important account of the outbreak of the plague in Sicily in 1575/76 and the medical countermeasures introduced by the author. Ingrassia (c. 1510-1580) was an important anatomist, teaching at Naples, and a clinician: his work in Palermo was of great value in containing the outbreak of plague there. A Pars quinta was published in 1577 (see Wellcome I 3417), but this is not present here, nor in the British Library copy. It is similarly neither in the Waller copy, nor that described by Durling.

Binder's label on rear pastedown. Checkmark in top corner of title page. last page has slightly chipped top corner with a few ink marks in upper margin. The first medical book about Upper Canada and one of only two medical works relating to the War of 1812. Douglas's Medical Topography is an extremely important and scarce work, for which we can find no British or American auction records for 50 years. The author, Dr. John Douglas (1788-1861), was an Assistant Surgeon with the 8th Regiment on the Niagara Frontier, present at the battles of Chipawa, Fort Erie, and Lundy's Lane, as well as spending considerable time at the military hospital at Fort York. London: Thomas Cotes, 1640. First edition. Large thick folio, title page, dedication page, preface two pages, author's tributes ten pages, then (ii), 1734 (but actually slightly less as there are several errors of pagination), illustrated with over 2,100 woodcut figures, lacking the extra engraved title page, the 20-page addenda at the rear and the errata leaf, but otherwise complete and very sound. The contents are extremely clean and tight, there is the odd crease and an occasional tiny corner missing but overall in impressive condition. The front and rear endpapers are a little browned and marked, both front and rear hinges are cracked and showing a little silver-fish damage but there is no weakness at all. Full panelled calf, probably eighteenth century but possibly earlier, a little rubbed, a little worn at the edges, scuffed on the upper cover, rebacked fairly recently with a leather spine and red morocco label. A Note From Fred Rogers: A child's first visit with a pediatrician usually comes soon after birth. It may be months or even years later, though, that a child first shows fear about going to see a doctor. The worry of an injection or some other unfamiliar medical procedure can trigger that fear.
