London: Adam and Charles Black, 1905. Near fine.. Signed limited first edition, one of 50 unnumbered copies for presentation, signed by John Greenaway and additionally signed by a woman for whom Greenaway wrote a story that is collected in this book, with an original sketch by Greenaway bound in. This copy is signed not only by Greenaway's brother, but by Violet Severn (whose mother was the adopted daughter of John Ruskin). On page 140 is a facsimile of a story written by Greenaway for Severn. Severn gave special permission for the story to be produced for this edition. The included sketch is of a little girl wearing a hat, and gazing down. A lovely association copy of an important book for any Greenaway collector. Quarto. 10.25'' x 8''. Original white cloth, lettered in gilt with pictorial blind-stamping. Top edge gilt, color pictorial endpapers, red silk ribbon marker. Illustrated with more than 50 color plates and many black-and-white images. xx, 301, [1] pages. Original sketch matted and bound in, with John Greenaway's signature of authenticity. Some light marginal soiling around matting. Verso of frontispiece and a number of tissue guards somewhat foxed. Boards only faintly soiled.
