(plan). wood-engraved title vignettes. original blind-stamped cloth, rebacked, retaining endpapers (remains of label on lower spine of Vol. I, scattered light foxing). First Edition. An officer in the British army, Alexander was stationed in the Canadas and Halifax and New Brunswick from 1841 to 1847 and from 1848 to 1855. During his stay in New Brunswick, he was engaged in a survey of communications between that province and Quebec City. Alexander took a keen interest in his surroundings and travelled widely, making the acquaintance of some of the country’s leading personalities, including Thomas Talbot, William Dunlop, Archibald McNab, and the notorious smuggler and pirate, Bill Johnstone. He also relates his meeting in Kingston with British novelist Charles Dickens. The plates include views of Kingston, London, a forest camp, Grand Falls, the Miramichi, and Chambly. Dionne II 1260.
