About This Item

San Diego: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1985. First edition. Fine in very good plus dust jacket.. Signed first printing of this bittersweet story of the magical origin of a common songbird - with a large original drawing of a fairy child in 3/4 view. Michael Hague's detailed style is very much in the aesthetic tradition of Golden Age artists like Howard Pyle and Arthur Rackham. His illustrations for collections of classic stories make his art a touchstone of many childhoods, and a visual delight for all readers. Exceptionally scarce and desirable signed by both author and illustrator, and with an astonishing original drawing. 11'' x 8.5''. Original brown cloth boards. Original price-clipped color pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated in color. 32 pages. Signed by Hague to half-title page, with a large drawing of a fairy child; signed by the author on title page. Ink gift inscription dated Christmas 1986 to front pastedown. Jacket with a hint of sunning to spine, mild rubbing near joints; a touch of edgewear. Tight.
