Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1928. First American edition. Illustrated. [vi], 312, [2] pp. 8vo. Publisher's black cloth with printed paper labels. Spine faded, bump to upper right corner, a few marginal notes, in printed orange dust-jacket, soiled and chipped. First American edition. Illustrated. [vi], 312, [2] pp. 8vo. Inscribed by Edward Garnett. The dust-jacket inscribed by Edward Garnett on the front flap: "The anonymous writer of this 'blurb' shows such force of imagination that I have prophesied a great future for him in American letters! E.G." On the back flap, Garnett has crossed out and written "Bosh!" over a paragraph which claims him the first critic to encourage W.H. Hudson, John Galsworthy and Stephen Crane. The book is further inscribed by Garnett on the front free endpaper.
Garnett (1868-1937), editor and critic, was the recipient of the letters collected here, though he omits his side of the correspondence. He was an important champion of Conrad - he recommended publication of Almayer's Folly to Unwin and offered support to the writer in the early stages of his career.
