PHYSICAL BOOK as published 1891, A NICE COPY. -- A large hardcover book, 790 pages, bright gilt lettering on brown cloth, top-edge-gilt TEG, beautifully crisp & clean interior. Condition: very good plus (a little wear at spine tips, faint scuff along cover edges). -- O'Reilly (?1770-1829, scholar of Irish language and writers) had quite a "life" including escapes from British prison and from Australian transportation, finally to Boston where he edited the leading Irish-American newspaper. His poems often addressed heroism of the common soldier, and he was best known for his speeches, called an "eagar-hearted lover of humanity." [Robert Welch]

Scarce copy of the personal perspective of the Irish journalist and war correspondent Francis McCullagh (1874-1956) on the Spanish Civil War which was raging as he wrote.In his account, he is unashamedly sympathetic to Franco and the Fascist cause and includes commentary on the Irish and Blueshirt involvement in the war.
The binding is tight. Book has age related shelf wear but boards are sound with slight soiling to rear cover and spine.
Gilt lettering on spine (a little faded). Spine extremities a little rubbed.
Text block is very good+.
Very light occasional spotting, otherwise leaves clean with no markings. Small black mark on lower edge not affecting leaves.
A very good copy. Very scarce.

Scarce First Edition. MacMillan, London 1899.Written by Stephen Gwynn (1864-1950), who was a one time Irish Nationalist MP for Galway, the book is a type of travel guide for the Ulster counties of Donegal and Antrim.
The book contains a total of 87 lovely illustrations by the noted Irish illustrator Hugh Thomson (1860-1920).
Book is is in very good condition. Green coloured boards with gilt lettering. Top edge of text block gilt, others rough cut. Some fading to boards particularly spine with head and tail rubbed. Binding good. Internally clean with no foxing, markings or inscriptions.
There is a pull out map of the counties in very good condition.
Front pastedown has the bookplate of previous owner, Matthew Mackey, a Newcastle upon Tyne collector. There is also a tiny label of Newcastle upon Tyne bookshop (Mawson, Swan & Morgan). A lovely First Edition
