About This Item

This is a scarce, early copy of the "Life and Times of FREDERICK DOUGLASS Written by Himself" - His Early Life as a Slave, His Escape from Bondage, and His Complete History to the Present Time. 1882 early edition (following the 1st edition published in 1881); Park Publishing Co.; Hartford, CT. The book features 18 full-page illustrations including engraved portraits of Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, and John Brown - all 18 illustrated plates are present. The book includes Douglass's "connection with the anti-slavery movement; His labors in Great Britain as well as in his own country; His experiences in the conduct of an influential newspaper; His connection with the Underground Railroad; His relations with John Brown and the Harper's Ferry raid; His recruiting the 54th and 55th Mass. colored regiments; His interviews with Presidents Lincoln and Johnson; His appointment by Gen. Grant to accompany the Santo Domingo commission - also to a seat in the council of the District of Columbia; His appointment as United States Marshal by President R.B. Hayes; Also his appointment to be Recorder of Deeds in Washington by President J.A. Garfield; With many other interesting and important events of his most eventful life." This is Douglass's third and last autobiography of his life as a slave, runaway, and then campaigner for the abolition of slavery. Original publisher's cloth binding.

Condition:
Staining and soiling to the covers and spine. The top edge of the spine is worn down with cloth pieces missing. Small cloth tears at the cover corners, and at the bottom edge of the spine. There is a partial crack at the front hinge between the copyright page and the 1st contents page 1/3 of the way down from the top resulting in the front cover being a bit shaky. The back cover is firmly attached. The text pages are lightly age-toned with consistent stains, smudges, and foxing (the foxing is mostly mild, though heavier on the frontispiece and the tissue guard over it). The illustrated plates have a thin stain line along the top edge; the Abraham Lincoln plate has larger stains at the top and right-hand edges. Page 23 has a tear at the upper-inner corner. The illustrated plate after page 284 is present but has detached and has tears along the perimeter. "1890" written in pen on the front pastedown. A perfectly fine reading copy, but in overall Fair condition only.
