About This Item
Tokyo: Akane Shobo, 1952. Hardcover. 12mo. Color pictorial paper over boards. 113pp. Illustrations (one full color), map/pictorial endpapers. Very good. Faint edgewear and touch of rubbing. Tight, attractive copy of this charming Japanese biography of Abraham Lincoln for juveniles, authored by this group that called itself Jidou Bungakusha Kyokai (Youth Literary Scholar Association), which jointly authored many such titles for children. Since our knowledge of Japanese is minimal -- O.K., nonexistent -- we are unable to determine edition. Most unusual. Interesting that in the U.S. Benjamin Thomas's "Lincoln: A Biography" was published this same year and that interest in Lincoln seems to have been at an all-time high -- even, apparently, in the Orient. It's also fascinating that despite the illustrator's best efforts to depict in line drawings many scenes from Lincoln's life, not only the faces but even some of the settings and landscapes appear vaguely oriental.
