About This Item

University, Alabama: The University of Alabama Press, 1976. Locust Hill is a narrative of an ante-bellum mansion, told through the lives of the family that flourished in it and finally faded... a narrative told by the last of the line to inhabit Locust hill. This book is a jewel, an heirloom....a tender portrait of a way of life whose last leaves are falling, but one that has been realized superbly well at Locust hill. Photographs and the author's etchings make this volume even more memorable. This narrative begins in 1865 when the author's great-grandfather, Captain John Taylor Rather, bought Locust Hill in Tuscumbia, Alabama, for three thousand dollars in gold. This was after his plantation home in Morgan County, Alabama had been burned by Federal troops. Part of this money had been buried during the war, and part had been carried by his daughter-in-law and her maid in stockings sewed to belts under their hoop skirts. Yellow and black tweed boards. No ownership markings. Photo dust jacket.. Second Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good.
