De Blegny, Etienne,Very Rare original edition of L'Ortografe françoise. Paris: G. André, 1667, 155 pp., elegantly rebound in green leather with gilt titles and gilt decoration to spine; top edge gilt, slight bumping to corners. First book published by Writing Master and Calligrapher Etienne de Blégny. a member of the guild of maîtres écrivains. This early pedagogical work is a treatise on French orthography. Notation inside front cover suggests this volume is from library of Augustin de Backer (1809-1873), Belgian Jesuit and renowned bibliographer.

Mediolani: Ex Tipografia Joannis Pirottae, 1817. First edition of this large and important work on the structure of the urethra. Four large engraved plates by Filippo Bedetti, engraved by Carlo Della Rocca, to the rear of the book. Green softback covers with some marking to the cover. The paper on the spine has has considerable loss, but the binding is still holding well. Internally mainly clean, with a little marking, foxing and few small worm holes. Plates have light staining to the edges, but still mainly clean and tidy. A scarce item. xii, 60 pp. 460 x 330 mm (18 x 13 inches). In the beginning of the 19th century, when both vascular and cellular texture theories concerning the penis structure were still coexisting, three figures were involved in the controversy about the priority of the discovery of the vascular nature of human erectile tissues: Paolo Mascagni (1755-1815), represented by his pupil Tommaso Farnese (1780-1829), and Alessandro Moreschi (1771-1826). Ives, designed, and printed by Bruce Rogers. Aldus praised the original edition for its adaptation of the roman type in its use of the French language. His discussion of the formation of roman capitals by geometric means led to many advances in design in early printing. His models for the capitals, set within a modular grid, displayed an approach to their construction that was unique to Tory, and his commentary critiqued the parallel efforts of the early letterform theorists. Bound in 1/4 vellum over decorative paper covered boards, spine lettering gilt, spine somewhat darkened, in near fine dust jacket showing minor wear to spine ends, housed within publisher's slipcase showing wear to edges. A very nice copy.

Folio half calf (covers off & lacking spine/tips worn) 81 leaves + 102pp incl. adverts for Atlases. Slight edge dusting to a few leaves and some offsetting where opposite page is mainly sea. One opening has small ink spotting. All roads, boundaries and wooded areas coloured.

Quarto contemporary panelled calf (rebacked & blind-tooled with black spine label/tips worn) 336pp +(vi)index The Ae of Aquaticae & Noxae are very faintly printed on the Titlepage and there is slight paper thinning to the paper in 4 small (1cm diameter) round areas and part of 2 letters have been strengthened with ink. Wepfer was the first to analyze the pharmacological effect of hemlock and its poison. In this treatise 1679 the author also reports the discovery of the duodenal glands.

Tall Octavo. one of 550 copies, xli pp. preface by Leo Claretie, 249pp., extra-illustrated with double tinted plates with protective tissue guards, exquisitely bound in full red crushed morocco, both boards elaborately decorated in gilt with green onlays while framing a family crest in gilt on upper board, raised bands with compartments lettered and decorated in gilt, full morocco red and blue crushed morocco doublures highly decorated in gilt, silk free endpaper and marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, all others uncut. upper joint professionally repaired and finely done. A very handsome volume.

Two other black and white illustrations; one is signed in the plate J[ean].Massard and the other is unidentified, both tipped in between the half-title and title page, with two more black & white illustrations by Massard tipped into the text. 256(1) with the 12 original engraved vignettes by Edmond Morin. The first six chapters of this volume are the result of the first two chapters of the volume entitled: (Madame et Monsieur Cardinal (Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal) published in 1872. OCLC records a limited edition of 25 copies of this work with the original 12 vignettes on Chine and tipped in as opposed to only printed above the text. An additional two copies of an unidentified illustrator with tipped in plates between half-title and tile page, although none are included in collation and does not make mention of a color illustration by Ulysse-Roy.
