About This Item
Hardcover first edition, published by Yale University Press, 1997. The dust jacket is intact and is not price clipped. 266 pages with Index and Notes. Sturdy black cloth covered boards, sewn binding, illustrated throughout with detailed maps. Black examines the history of maps and how their influence has changed over the years. The focus here is on the influence they have on portraying peoples, languages and cultural differences and how that has changed throughout history. As is the case with all Yale Press titles, this is printed on high quality paper stock with sturdy binding and boards. This copy would appear to be unused. No marks to the dust jacket, no edge wear. The boards are flat and the binding is tight and square. Author's name and title imprinted on the spine in gold, all lettering is intact, crisp and not worn. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. The edges of the text pages are clean. This is not a remainder, not a library copy. Attached is a photo of the copy we have in our inventory.
Synopsis
Historical atlases offer an understanding of the past which is invaluable to historians, not only because they convey a previous age's sense of space and distance but also because they reveal what historians and educators of those periods thought important to include or omit. This book --- the first comprehensive and wide-ranging account of the historical atlas -- explores the role, development and nature of this important reference tool and discusses its impact on the presentation of the past. Includes bibliographical references (p. [242]-259) and index.
