About This Item
London: Printed for J. Bumpus, 1820. Second edition. Very Good. 15cm; viii, [13]-364 pages, and engraved frontispiece showing the embrace of Hector, Andromache and Astyanax. Bound in later reddish niger morocco inlaid with faux "cords" in contrasting red. Border, ornaments and title stamped in blind. Marbled endleaves. Very nice binding, apparently not signed. Minor shelf wear.
This catholic survey of "amatory customs" ranges through various national and tribal practices in some detail, occasionally touching on kinship systems, and generally quiet about sex . The section on New Orleans, for instance, documents the separate "white" and "colored" aristocracy, each with their own rules of courtship. Remarkable binding.

About Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio
Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio owes its name and its inspiration to the traditional Italian studio bibliografico. These small antiquarian bookshops, typically run by individuals who combine deep scholarship with a love of the printed object, remind us that underlying the words "study" and "studio" is the Latin term for zeal and devotion, studium. Since 1993, my goal has been to match discerning collectors with extraordinary books and manuscripts.
